Abstract
A detergent powder having a moisture content below about 10 per cent and a bulk density of not more than about 0.4 g./cc., preferably about 0.3 g./cc., is obtained by spray-drying a slurry to yield a product comprising (a) 5-15 per cent of a mixture of (i) a compound having the formula HO(C2H4O)a(C3H6O)b (C2H4O)cH, where b has the value 26-30 and c together have a value such that the molecule contains 40-50 per cent of oxyethylene units, and (ii) the condensation product of 9 mols. of ethylene oxide with 1 mol. of a propylene phenol having an average of 14 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain (i) preferably constituting about 10 per cent, and (ii) about 1 per cent of the composition; (b) 20-50 per cent, preferably about 39 per cent, of pentasodium tripolyphosphate; (c) 5-15 per cent, preferably about 11 per cent, of sodium silicate, which desirably has a SiO2: Na2O ratio of 2.4-2.0; (d) 10-20 per cent, preferably about 17 per cent, of an alkaline inorganic salt such as sodium carbonate; and (e) 0.2-2.0 per cent of soap. The composition may also include dyes, inert ingredients such as sodium sulphate, or carboxymethylcellulose salts, but will preferably contain about 0.5 per cent of sodium carboxymethylhydroxyethylcellulose.
