Abstract

687,051. High-tension switches; actuation of switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. June 15, 1951 [July 15, 1950], No. 14186/51. Class 38 (v) [Also in Group XXIX] A switch has a tank 12 with its lower portion 12a of semi-circular vertical cross-section and oval horizontal cross-section, and its upper portion 126 of truncated conical shape. The tank may be fabricated by cutting into halves A, B a circular dished head of semi-elliptical cross-section and welding the halves together to form the lower portion. The upper portion is then formed by so bending two members C and D that when they are welded together, they form a truncated, but flattened or oval cone. The two portions are welded together and a top plate 17 is provided to support bushing insulators 18 and 19. The insulators carry arc-extinguishing units 47 with which a bridging contact member 46 co-operates, the latter being operated by linkage 6 as described in Specification 686,648. It is stated that the tank provides adequate electrical clearances with a minimum fluid volume and a good voltage gradient on the inside of the tank due to the absence of sharp corners.
