Abstract
686,648. High tension switches; actuation of switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. June 15, 1951 [July 15, 1950], No. 14185/51. Class 38 (v) [Also in Groups XXIV and XXIX] A switch has a tank of such a shape as to provide adequate electrical clearances between the tank walls and the live parts of the switch with a minimum volume of oil or other fluid in the tank. The tank 4 is of generally circular side elevational shape and has an oval cross-section, i.e. its shape is that of an oblate spheroid. It is formed by welding together at 11, two circular dished heads 9, 10 of semi-elliptical cross-section. An upstanding oval tubular member 12 is welded to a cut-out portion 13 of the top of the tank. Bushing insulators 2, 3 extend through a cover member 17 secured on the member 12, the lower ends of the insulators carrying arc-extinguishing units 6 with which a bridging contact-member 7 co-operates. The live parts of the interrupting units 6 are at substantially the same distance S from the walls of the tank, this distance being the minimum distance necessary to prevent "flash-over". The bushing insulators have a length X which is greater than twice the radius R of the circular section of the tank. The switch is actuated by a lift rod 8 through linkage 5 housed between the bushing insulators 2, 3. To open the switch, a rod 19, Fig. 2 is pulled to turn an operating shaft 23, Fig. 6 in a clockwise direction The shaft 23 turns a toggle link 25 to break a toggle 25, 27, which forces a link 34 diagonally downwards to rotate a lever 36 about a fixed pivot 37. This causes the counterclockwise rotation of a triangularlyshaped plate 39 which is pivoted at 41 on a link 42 having a fixed pivot 43. The plate 39 moves the rod 8 downwards in guides (not shown) to open the switch contacts. Specification 621,452, is referred to.
