A gas-blast or low-oil content circuit-breaker has an interrupter unit 14 secured within a vertical tubular housing 13 by detachable securing means 15 at the lower end of the housing which is mounted on a raised support member 11 permitting downward withdrawal of the unit 14 from the housing for maintenance purposes. In the Figure, two low-oil content interrupter units 14 are secured by closure plates 15 bolted to flanges 16 at the lower end of the tubular insulators 13, the plates and flanges forming electrical connections to the lower ends of the units 14. The other connections are formed by co-operating plugs and sockets 17 at the upper ends of the units 14. Each unit may be of the multi-break rotary action type with the moving contacts mounted on a common shaft 18. To remove a unit, a hand or motor-operated winch 19 is secured to the support beam 11 and a pulley frame 21 is secured to the top cap assembly 22 after removal of a valve assembly 23. A lifting eye 24 on a wire cable 25 is screwed to the upper end of the shaft 18. The plate 15 is then unbolted, the weight of the unit being supported by the cable 25. The unit may then be lowered to the ground. In a modified arrangement a single unit circuit-breaker is directly carried by a hollow support insulator which is supported by a base frame. In this case, the unit is lowered from its housing through the support insulator (complete Figure, not shown).
