Abstract

Synthetic rubber, e.g. butadiene-styrene, butadiene - acrylonitrile, and isobutyleneisoprene copolymers is treated, particularly with a view to facilitating the dispersion of fillers, by adding the products of nitration of polycyclic hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum by selective extraction with furfurol. Preferably about 10 per cent of the nitro body, based on the weight of the filter to be introduced, is used, and it is emulsified with wool fat, lecithin, stearic acid, and its soaps, or is added in combination with a solvent having one or more polar groups. Other specified fillers are alumina gel, basic aluminium sulphate, calcium and aluminium silicates, colloidal silicic acid and polyvinyl chloride.ALSO:Natural or synthetic rubber is treated, particularly with a view to facilitating the dispersion of fillers, by adding the products of nitration of polycyclic hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum by selective extraction with furfurol. Preferably about 10 per cent of the nitro body based on the weight of the filler to be introduced is used and it is emulsified with wool fat, lecithin, stearic acid, and its soaps. It may also be used in combination with a solvent having one or more polar groups. In an example the mix consists of smoked sheet rubber, zinc white, magnesium oxide, a nitration product of polycyclic hydrocarbons from selective furfurol extraction of petroleum, sulphur, hexamethylenetetramine, and alumina gel. Other specified fillers are basic aluminium sulphate, calcium and aluminium silicates, and colloidal silicic acid, and polyvinyl chloride.
