Abstract

232,723. Edser, E., and Marshall, J. S. Feb. 8, 1924. Water-paints. - An opaque water-paint comprises cholesterol, e.g. wool fat, and a hardening agent, such as a mixture of casein and formaldehyde or other active aldehyde. The paint preferably comprises a mineral in a colloidal state, produced for example, by deflocculation, as by the electro-osmotic purification process and apparatus described in Specification 725/12, [Class 41, Electrolysis]. The preferred mineral ingredient is colloidal clay (kaolin), but this may be partially or wholly replaced by lithopone, barium sulphate, yellow ochre, fire-clay, coloured earths or ball clays. In an example, a. paint is obtained by mixing water, colloidal kaolin, casein, ammonia, linseed oil, wool fat, naphtha. and formalin. The naphtha may be replaced by cresol, creosote, phenol or other preservative. The wool fat is preferably purified by one of the processes set forth in Specification 163,474.
