Abstract
Ferrous sheets are prepared for lacquering by treating with an aqueous acidic solution (pH not more than 1.9) containing orthophosphate ions corresponding to at least 5 gms. P2O5 per litre and then passivating with an aqueous solution of chromic acid, a chromate or a nitrite or a mixture thereof, such solution also containing a compound having the property of sequestering metallic ions to avoid sludge formation. The first solution may contain orthophosphoric acid and a primary phosphate of zinc, manganese, iron or calcium, a wetting agent such as a fatty alcohol sulphonate or an alkylated arylsulphonic acid and a fat solvent such as an alcohol. The ion-sequestering compound in the second solution may be a pyrophosphate, metaphosphate, polyphosphate, or the sodium salt of iminotriacetic or ethylene bis-imino diacetic acid; this solution may also contain sodium carbonate. The first solution may be applied by spraying or immersion with or without brushing.
