Abstract

551,261. Modifying metallic surfaces. PYRENE CO., Ltd., (Parker Rust-Proof Co,.). Oct. 3, 1941, No. 12821. [Class 82 (ii)] Coatings are produced on metal surfaces by an acid phosphate solution containing a nitrate or nitrite or both and at least one chlorate. The solution, generally containing zinc dihydrogen phosphate, is sprayed on to the surface at a temperature of 115-180‹F, the pH value of the solution being maintained at 2.5-2.9 by the continuous addition of a neutralising agent such as sodium, hydroxide, and the solution circulated and resprayed. The solution may also contain a copper compound, e.g. copper carbonate, as an accelerator and the coated surface may be treated with chromic acid. In an example, the production of a coating solution from zinc oxide, nitric and phosphoric acids, sodium chlorate and copper carbonate is referred to. Instead of zinc phosphate, other phosphates such as of manganese may be used. Specifications 346,401, 386,739 and 514,443 are referred to.
