686,248. Trailer brake mechanism. MARSDEN, A. Feb. 7, 1951 [Feb. 8, 1950], No. 3257/50. Class 103 (i). In brake mechanism for a trailer of the type in which the hand brake lever 16 on the trailer is adapted to be urged to the brake applying position by a member 20 slidable fore-and-aft in a guide as a result of the trailer over-running the tractor vehicle, a ratchet arm 25 pivoted to the lever 16 and engageable with a pawl 27 on the trailer is adapted to be held in the inoperative position by an operating rod 28. As shown in Fig. 3 the ratchet arm is held inoperative by engaging a loop or the like (not shown) on the rod 28 with a hook member 32. If required the lever 16 may be kept in the brakes applied position by engaging the end of the ratchet arm 25 directly with the pawl 27, as shown in Fig. 4. In a further embodiment, Fig. 8, the towing bar 34 is of square tubular cross-section and the lever 16 has its lower end looped around and pivoted to the bar.
