Abstract

756,266. Vehicle handbrake mechanism. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and MERRILEES, J. D. July 18, 1955 [July 23, 1954], No. 21512/54. Class 103(1) In order to provide means, in a vehicle hand brake mechanism, whereby the withdrawal of the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet is facilitated by easing the stress in the brake rigging, the ratchet 1, in the form of a sector pivoted at its apex to the pivot pin 4 of the hand brake lever 5 is held in engagement with an abutment, in the form of a cam 9, when the hand brake is released by a spring 8. Release of the hand brake when in the applied position illustrated is effected by operating the catch handle 7 to lift the pawl 3 out of engagement with one of the teeth 2 of the ratchet 1. If the stress in the brake rigging is such as to render difficult this withdrawal of the pawl 3, this stress may be eased by depressing pedal 10 to rotate cam 9 to allow ratchet 1 to be rotated about pivot 4, by the stress in the brake rigging, to ease the stress sufficiently to enable the pawl 3 to be withdrawn from ratchet 1.
