913,066. Trailer-vehicle brakes. PEAK TRAILER & CHASSIS Ltd. June 13, 1961, No. 21212/61. Class 103 (1). In a trailer vehicle of the type connectable to a towing vehicle by a coupling shaft 9 wherein endwise movement of the shaft 9 is resisted by a damper 22 and serves to actuate the brake gear through the medium of a rocking lever 14, the damper 22 is applied at 26 to an arm of the lever 14 whose adjacent extremity carries a roller 17 engaging a slot 18 in the shaft 9. Endwise movement of the shaft 9 through a box 6 secured to the chassis 5 is transmitted via the lever 14, which is pivoted at 15 on a bracket 13, to a pull-rod 21. The latter rod actuates the brakes by means of a T-shaped lever 43 pivoted at 44, the shank of the T being connected to the rod 21 and the other two limbs to pull-rods 46 connected to the near and offside brakes. To obviate " shunting " the shaft 9 carries a collar 27 which co-operates with a bow spring 28 fixed to the box 6. A rubber washer 29 in front of the collar 27 provides a resilient forward stop for the shaft 9. Automatic application of the brakes in the event of the hitch head 10 becoming detached from the towing ball 11 is effected via the pull rod 21 by the handbrake lever 34 which is actuated in this event by a cable 42 connected to the towing vehicle. The lever 34 is pivoted at 33 on the bracket 13 and is provided with a pawl-and-rack device 35, 36. Slots 38, 40 is the end 37 of the rod 21 enable manual braking with lever 34 and automatic braking by means of lever 14 to be carried out independently. A catch 30 pivoted at 31 is engaged in a slot 32 during reversing.
