Abstract

The lubricant reservoir of a plug valve (see Group XXIX), contains a composition consisting of a plastic lubricant diluted with a highly volatile thinning vehicle, thereby permitting easy flow of the lubricant from the reservoir to the seating surfaces of the valve. Thus the reservoir of a plug valve in a line carrying aqueous liquids may contain a composition consisting of aluminium fatty acid soap, carnauba wax, blown castor oil and toluol. Instead of toluol other highly volatile thinning vehicles, such as mesityl oxide, n-octene, carbon tetrachloride, cyclohexanone, carbitol, diacetone alcohol, ethyl benzene, turpentine, cyclohexane or acetone may be employed. The reservoir of a plug valve in a line carrying hydrocarbon liquids such as gasoline, naphtha, fuel oil, benzol or toluol, or solvents such as carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene may contain a composition consisting of glycerine, sodium stearate and ethyl alcohol. Instead of ethyl alcohol, other highly volatile thinning vehicles, such as isopropyl alcohol, methanol, isobutyl alcohol or amyl carbinol may be employed. The composition consisting of plastic lubricant and thinning vehicle, if marketed in stick form, may be given a protective coating of wax or protective plastic. A less viscous composition, for grease gun application, may however be marketed in bulk form.
