Abstract

A lubricating composition, suitable for addition to the gasoline used as fuel in two-stroke engines, comprises a major proportion of mineral lubricating oil, 1-5 per cent by weight of wool-grease and 1-5 per cent by weight of a C10-C20 fatty acid or an ester of such an acid, the ester being derived from a monohydric alcohol. Suitable esters are esters of C1-C5 monohydric alcohols, such as isopropyl alcohol. The lubricating composition may also contain an antioxidant such as diphenylamine, dicyclohexylamine, naphthylamine, phenylethanolamine, monomethylaniline and dimethylaniline. The woolgrease imparts to the composition the property of absorbing aqueous acidic materials formed by combustion of the fuel, while the fatty acid or ester thereof increases the adhesion of the lubricating oil to the metal surfaces of the engine, thereby reducing corrosion. In the example, a lubricating composition consisting of mineral lubricating oil, woolgrease and the mixed isopropyl esters of C10-C20 fatty acids sold under the name "Vistone B-12" (the word "Vistone" being a Registered Trade Mark), with or without diphenylamine, is added to a gasoline of high sulphur content.
