Abstract
Esters of 2-methyl-2-norcamphanemethanol with dicarboxylic acids, which esters have the formula <FORM:0882688/III/1> where n is 5-10, are used as lubricants alone or in admixture with other lubricants, e.g. hydrocarbon oils. They have good thermal stability and may be used in turbo-jet aircraft engines. Additives such as thickeners anti-corrosion agents, viscosity index improvers, extremepressure additives, and anti-oxidants, may be present in the compositions.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formula: <FORM:0882688/IV (b)/1> when n is 5-10. The compounds may be prepared by esterifying two molar proportions of 2-methyl-2-norcamphanmethanol with one molar proportion of a C7-C12 saturated dicarboxylic acid, such as pimelic suberic azelaic, sebacic, nonanedicarboxylic or decanedicarboxylic acid. The alcohol used as starting material may be prepared by reacting cyclopentadiene with methyl methacrylate in a Diels Alder reaction, hydrogenating the resulting methyl 2-methyl bicyclo-[2.2.1]-5-heptene-2-carboxylate over Raney nickel to give methyl 2-methyl-2-norcamphanecarboxylate, and subjecting it to hydrogenolysis in the presence of copper chromite. Examples are given.
