Abstract

The invention comprises new tetrahydronaphthylamino compounds of the general formula <FORM:0733453/IV (b)/1> in which X stands for <FORM:0733453/IV (b)/2> or <FORM:0733453/IV (b)/3> R representing hydrogen or an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical. They may be prepared by catalytically hydrogenating compounds of the formula <FORM:0733453/IV (b)/4> The compounds may be used as additives to lubricants. In the example a -naphthylamine is heated with cyclohexanol in the presence of a Raney nickel catalyst to give N-cyclohexyl a -naphthylamine which is hydrogenated to give N-cyclohexyl-tetrahydro-a -naphthylamine.ALSO:Compounds of the general formula <FORM:0733453/III/1> in which X is <FORM:0733453/III/2> or <FORM:0733453/III/3> R representing hydrogen or an alkyl or hydroxy-alkyl group, are used as additives for lubricants. They may be mixed with other additives, particularly with phosphorus compounds containing aromatic radicals, especially esters of primary aliphatic alcohols and phosphinic acids containing aromatic radicals. In an example N - cyclohexyl - tetrahydro - a - naphthylamine and the butyl ester of bis-(p-chlorophenyl)-phosphinic acid are added to a refined mineral oil.
