Abstract
552,732. Stabilized lubricating oils. ATLANTIC REFINING CO. April 23, 1941, No. 5264. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1940. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] Lubricants and cutting oils of mineral oil, fatty oil, grease, wax &c. bases are stablized against oxidation by the addition thereto of a small amount of mixed ester of a phosphorous acid containing at least one and not more than two alkyl-aroxy-alkyl radicals ; the additive is also effective as an E.P. base. The oils treated particularly comprise lubricating oils of high V.I. obtained by solvent refining methods particularly when used with the harder but more corrodible bearing metals required in machinery subjected to extreme pressure conditions. To prepare the additive in general at least one mol of an ester is heated with 1 to 2.5 mols of an alkyl-aroxy-alkanol at a temperature of 200‹ to 500‹ F., reduced or increased pressure being used if necessary, the product being separated from the reaction mixture by usual methods. One or more of the alkanol groups are introduced into the ester. The proportion of the mixed ester added to the oil ranges from 0.05 to 2.0 per cent. An additional film strength agent may also be added, such as tricresyl phosphate. The starting esters may be aryl, alkylated aryl, alkyl, mixed alkyl-aryl, and hydro aromatic phosphites; the mono- and di-phosphites are included. Examples of a large number of specified phosphites comprise tri-phenyl phosphite, the tricresyl phosphites, the triethyl phenyl phosphites, and trimethyl phosphite. They may be esters of phosphorous acid, hypophosphorous, pyrophosphorous or thiophosphorous acids. The alkyl aroxy alkanols are of general formula RC n H 2n-x OR<SP>1</SP> OH, where " x " is at least 8 and the compounds specified comprise propyl phenoxymethanol, and octyl phenoxyethanol, the alkyl phenoxy and methanol or ethanol groups being replaceable by other alkyl, aroxy and alkanol groups respectively. The preparation of the reaction product of tricresyl phosphite and octyl phenoxyethanol is described in detail.
