Abstract

Lubricants having a low coefficient of friction and causing low surface wear consist of at least 1 per cent of organic compounds not containing metallic atoms and consisting of at least three substituted or unsubstituted rings interconnected directly or indirectly, dissolved or suspended in organic liquid or mixed with known lubricants. The rings are preferably interconnected by aliphatic radicles or non-metallic inorganic atoms or groups of atoms. Compounds containing atoms, groups of atoms or radicles capable of adhering physically or chemically to the metal surface to be lubricated, such as S, P, halogen, OH, COOH, CHO, CH3, CH, NH, NC and NO2, are preferred. In examples, wear is minimized by using a solution of 10 per cent of di-benzylidene benzidine in methyl cyclohexanol oxalate, or by adding sextol phthalate to a lubricating oil, or by using a solution of 5 per cent of triphenyl carbinol or tricresyl phosphate. Suitable solvents are methyl cyclohexanol oxalate and dimethyl cyclohexanol adipate, Examples of the three-ring added compounds are, diphenyl benene, bisdiphenyl, dibenzilidene-benzidine, sextol phthalate, diphenylquinone, diphenyltetramethylene dibenzyl-benzene truxillic acid, 2, 3-diphenyl-3 - oxy - 5 - keto - cyclopentene, 1, 2 - diphenyl-pentamethylene, 1, 2-di-phenyl-4-keto - cyclopentene, polymers of cyclopentadiene, 1, 3-diphenyl-2, 4, 5-tri-keto-pentamethylene, 1, 2-diphenyl-1, 2 - dioxypentamethylene, 1, 2-diphenyl-pentamethylene carboxylic acid, dibenzoyl benzene, benzyl diphenyl, phenyl benzophenone, dibenzoyl diphenyl, phenyl-o-benzoyl benzoic acid, bis-(diphenyl)-methane, diphenyl benzophenone and dibenzoyl benzidene.
