Abstract

Oxidation resistant mineral lubricating oil compositions contain a relatively small amount of a tertiary alkyl ether of a naphthol. The compounds may be derived from either a - or b -naphthol, and may contain more than one tertiary alkoxy group. The tertiary alkyl radicle is preferably tertiary butyl or tertiary amyl; the compounds also preferably contain an alkyl group attached directly to the nucleus. The compounds may have other usual substituent groups in the nucleus including long chain aliphatic radicles obtained from a petroleum wax or an ester wax. Compounds specified comprise tert. butyl ether of 4-isopropyl a -naphthol; tert. butyl ether of a -naphthol; tert butyl ether of b -naphthol; tert. amyl ether of a -naphthol; tert. amyl ether of b -naphthol; tert. butyl ether of 4-amino a -naphthol; tert. amyl ether of 7-methyl b -naphthol; tert. butyl ether of 4-chloro a -naphthol; and tert. amyl ether of 4-ethyl a -naphthol. The mineral oil specified comprises a petroleum turbine oil. Other usual additives may be incorporated in the compositions.
