Abstract

566,886. Lubricating greases. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Nov. 3, 1942, No. 15472. Convention date, Oct. 11, 1941. [Class 91] A water-insoluble, temperature stable, preferably anhydrous, reversible grease comprises a mixture of mineral lubricating oil and a non- basic barium soap formed by the reaction between a. barium salt and a fatty acid. The proportion of the soap in the finished compositions ranges from 5 to 50 per cent by weight. The mineral lubricating oil is generally a base oil of viscosity 35 to 220 at 210‹ F. S.U.V., and preferably of viscosity 100 to 2400 at 100‹ F. S.U.V. ; a low cold test Coastal type lubricating oil is specified. The soap may be prepared from the usual fatty acids, including fatty acids split from hydrogenated fish oils, such acids having at least 9 carbon atoms to the molecule. The soap is preferably made by using a more active hydrated barium oxide obtained by reacting barium oxide and water in an inert atmosphere, such as in the presence of a mineral lubricating oil. The soap may be prepared separately before compounding, or the fatty acid may be mixed with the mineral oil and then saponified, the hydrated barium oxide being in stoichiometrical or slightly less proportions. The compositions may contain other additives, such as anti-oxidants.
