Abstract
A metallic pigment composition comprises an aluminium flake pigment, a volatile hydrocarbon solvent and a surface active agent soluble in the hydrocarbon solvent for promoting dispersion of the pigment and the solvent in an aqueous medium, the surface active agent having a water solubility not greater than 2% and having surface tension characteristics such that when made up as a 0,1% solution in mineral spirits the solution exhibits an interfacial tension of not more than 12 dynes per centimetre against water. Examples of suitable wetting agents include substituted 2-oxazoline compounds, substituted 2-imidazolines, and substituted 2-triazoles, containing an alkyl or alkenyl substituent having from 12 to 22 carbon atoms. The composition may also contain a coupling agent soluble in both the water and oil phases of the emulsion, such as an alcohol; and an auxiliary emulsifying agent such as a fatty acid soap of a volatile base e.g. ammonium stearate. The compositions may be used in the manufacture of emulsion paints in which the film-forming agent is rubber, acrylic resin, alkyd resin, vinyl acetate resin, or styrene-butadiene resin. Examples are given of latex paints based on the pigment composition and containing polyvinyl acetate emulsion and ethylene glycol monobutyl ether; acrylic ester resin latex and isopropyl alcohol or hexylene glycol; an alicyclic ketone resin solution, spar varnish, and ethylene glycol monobutyl ether.ALSO:A metallic pigment composition comprises an aluminium flake pigment, a volatile hydrocarbon solvent and a surface active agent soluble in the hydrocarbon solvent for promoting dispersion of the pigment and the solvent in an aqueous medium, the surface active agent having a water solubility not greater than 2% and having surface tension characteristics such that when made up as a 0.1% solution in mineral spirits the solution exhibits an interfacial tension of not more than 12 dynes per centimeter against water.
