685,051. Valves. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH & CO. (PNEUMATIC TOOLS), Ltd., and WINHAM, H. W. Sept. 15, 1950 [June 16, 1949], No. 16061/49. Class 135. A check valve for air compressors, &c. utilizes permanent magnetism for urging the valve closure member towards its seat. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, a valve body 1 of non- magnetic material, and to which is attached a valve guard 2 also of non-magnetic material. has a deep annular groove 7 in which are secured by screws three permanent magnets 9 whose upper faces are slightly below two concentric seat rings 1a, 1b with which the annular. magnetized, valve member 6 coacts. Ports 1c are formed between the magnets 9. In a modification, an annular magnet 10, Fig. 4, has polarised faces against which are clamped annular pole pieces 11, 12, which form the valve seat. In another modification, which also has an annular magnet, the separate pole pieces are dispensed with and the valve member seats at its inner edge directly on the magnet and at its outer edge on the body of the valve, which in this case is of magnetic material so that the outer part of the seat also becomes a pole piece.
