Abstract
843,891. Magnetic couplings. TECHNIQUES NUCLEAIRES. Aug. 11, 1958 [Sept. 6, 1957], No. 25742/58. Class 35. [Also in Group XXIX] In a magnetic snap-action device for twoposition control of an armature e.g. to operate a valve, the controlling magnet has two pole pieces on each pole arranged to define air gaps on either side of the armature. By movement of the magnet the lengths of the air gaps are varied and the armature moves to bridge the nearer pair of pole pieces. The magnet assembly comprises two curved permanent magnets (1, 2, Fig. 2, not shown) with like poles adjacent to soft iron portions 3, 4 to which U-shaped pole pieces 5, 6 are attached, and is axially movable by hand wheel 52 which co-operates with a threaded portion of a fixed rod 34. A key 38 engages a slot in non-magnetic blocks 35 to prevent rotation. As shown the disc armature 14 operates a valve 21 and is enclosed in a non- magnetic (e.g. brass) airtight case 13 attached to the valve body to provide a sealed, glandless valve, e.g. for radio-active fluid or a toxic gas. Unless the walls of the armature case 13 are thin, crescent-shaped magnetic inserts 41-44 are soldered or welded to the case opposite the tips 7-10 of pole pieces 5, 6. An alternative arrangement is mentioned where the armature operates a rack and pinion.
