A pen or pencil b is attached to the cap j of a holder a in which is also mounted at least one sheet of material d which can be withdrawn into a visible position externally of the holder, the return of the sheet being effected by a spring controlled by a buttonoperated pawl. The sheet of material may be a map and is wound between flanges k, l on a spool c with its free end passing through a narrow slot in the casing and having a member e, Fig. 2 (not shown) by which the map can be withdrawn. Between the flange l and an additional flange m is mounted a spring h which is tensioned as the map is withdrawn. A pawl g engages teeth o on a skirt n of the flange m to prevent the spring from turning the spool c to wind up the withdrawn map until the pawl is released by button f.
