A writing instrument having a writing element 2, e.g. ball-point pen or pencil is displaceable in a barrel 1 between two axially fixed end positions, inscriptions being connected to the writing element, such that they are visible through a slot 4 provided in the barrel when the element 2 is displaced to one of its fixed end positions. The element 2 is rotated step-wise through a series of fixed rotating positions as it is displaced by a button 3 between its end positions. The slot 4 may be covered by a magnifying glass 6.
