Abstract

After a metal has been coated with another metal by any conventional electroplating method, the process is continued by stoving, first in a non-oxidizing, then in an oxidizing, atmosphere. The plating may be chromium or beryllium on a base of iron-nickel-cobalt alloy, and the plated member is then heated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere such as dry hydrogen for at least half an hour, at 1000 DEG C-1200 DEG C, which causes the plating to diffuse into the underlying metal. Further similar heating in an oxidizing atmosphere such as wet hydrogen leaves the plating lightly surface-oxidized. The application described is to the metal parts of metal-glass seals for electric discharge rectifiers containing alkali-metal vapour, for protection against the corrosive action of the hot vapour.
