Abstract

In the method of the parent Specification the surface bearing the phosphate coating is rinsed with water containing less than 7 parts per million of halogen ions, less than 60 parts per million of sulphate ions and less than 40 parts per million of hydroxyl ions before it is heated to form the mixed phosphate-oxide coating. Distilled or de-ionized water is preferably used. The rinsing may be effected by immersion, with vigorous agitation of the water, or by spraying using high-velocity sprays.
