Abstract

683,304. Making bearings. MARX, E. April 6, 1950 [April 6, 1949], No. 8704/50. Class 83 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIV] A bearing comprises inner and outer races, each in two parts 2, 4 and 6, 8 which are brought axially into engagement, and a floating ring or bush 10. The bush 10 has a hollow interior in the form of two cavities 20, and in both of its sliding surfaces there are circumferential grooves 22, communicating with the cavities 20 through openings 26 and decreasing in depth away from these openings until they run out in widened ends 28. The bush 10 is bounded axially by small annular spaces 30 communicating with the cavities 20 through slits 32. The cavities 20 contain oil which is circulated over the sliding surfaces by the action of the grooves 22 and their trailing widened ends 28. The spaces 30 are almost enclosed by the edges 38 of the races, so that the greater part of the oil returns from the sliding surfaces, through the slits 32, to the cavities 20. Oiling passages 40, 42 are provided through which lubricant may be added. In a modification, the bush 10 is constructed from a ring having a rectangular cross-section when viewed radially, slots being machined in the end faces to form the internal cavities and the ring then being rolled to shape. In a further modification, the bush is formed by pressing two washer-like blanks into C-section, spotwelding them back-to-back, and rolling them to shape. The cavities in the bush may be filled with wicking to allow storage of oil over long periods. Specification 683,305 is referred to.
