Abstract
1365352 Bearings TRW Inc 25 Oct 1971 [26 Oct 1970 8 Sept 1971] 49464/71 Heading F2A A method of manufacturing a rolling bearing cage comprises the steps of forming a ring of substantially rectangular cross-section, forming a plurality of circumferentially-spaced pockets by removal of material from said ring, and providing each pocket with at least two mutuallyopposed tangs adjacent to the inner or outer circumferential surface of the ring solely by removal of material therefrom. The cage of Figs. 2 and 4 is made by drilling part-way through the thickness of the ring, and then broaching with a notched broach to form the pockets 14 and tangs 20; the inner diameter side walls are then removed by grinding or milling. Side rings may be riveted to the cage (Fig. 3, not shown). In a further embodiment (Fig. 17), a pilot hole is drilled; then a square-cornered hole is made with a notched broach leaving ridges, parts of which will form the tangs 82, 83; then relieved areas 79 are formed with a reamer, milling cutter, or side drill. Additionally, the inner diameter side walls may be removed by grinding or milling. In a further embodiment (Fig. 19), only the middle parts of the ridges are removed by the milling cutter 91, thereby leaving tangs 94, 95 adjacent both inner and outer circumferential surfaces of the ring. The elements are inserted into the pockets of such cage either by expanding the cage by heating, or by using deformable or contracted rolling elements.
