[Also in Groups XXIII and XXXI] A washing-machine includes a container A for washing-liquid, a wringer having a body D which is pivotally mounted to fold from an operative to an inoperative position (as shown), and is capable of longitudinal movement along its pivot axis C, locking means for both the operative and inoperative positions comprising interengaging surfaces respectively afforded by a part L rigid with the container A and a part D<SP>0</SP> rigid with the wringer body D, and a spring C<SP>1</SP> tending to move the wringer body in the locking direction. The part D<SP>0</SP> is in the form of two ribs D<SP>2</SP>, D<SP>3</SP> which are urged by the action of the spring C<SP>1</SP> to engage beneath a rib forming the part L. A part L<SP>1</SP> of the rib L projects to form a stop for movement to the operative position. The rib D<SP>3</SP> is made longer than the rib D<SP>2</SP> for this purpose. The surfaces of the ribs D', D<SP>3</SP> and projection L may be inclined in order to produce a wedging action which compensates for wear. The handle of the crank for rotating the wringer rolls, may be of outwardly tapering contour so that a thrust on the casing tends to occur on operation of the wringer, in order to assist the spring C<SP>1</SP>. The washing machine has an inner lid (not shown) which occupies the part not taken up by the wringer and an outer lid (not shown) which can have one edge lodged under the wringer to form a work table, &c. An upper wringer roll (only just visible through the casing aperture D<SP>1</SP> in Fig. 2) is journalled in the casing D. The lower roll is journalled in a bearing block mounted in a U-shaped member F<SP>1</SP>. Springs F act between turned out ends of the member Fl and heads on bolts F<SP>2</SP> rigid with the casing D. Specifications 612,737 and 647,885 are referred to.
