Class 117 [Also in Group VI] In a method of recovering tobacco from rejected cigarettes or the like, the cigarettes are centrifuged so as to be.arranged in end-to-end relationship in a revolving annular string from which they are fed tangentially to a device for severing the outer wrapping of the cigarettes. As shown the cigarettes are dumped on to a rotating disc 1 and are centrifuged thereby against a fixed concentric wall 2 where they are aligned in a rotating annular string 4, the aligned cigarettes being fed tangentially from the disc through an aperture 5, in the wall 2, in which is arranged a cutter 6 or a tearing hook. To prevent clogging of the aperture 5 a rotary deflector 8 is arranged adjacent thereto to throw surplus cigarettes not in the string 4 back on to the disc 1, the central and peripheral portions of the disc being roughened to ensure that rotary motion is imparted to the cigarettes. In an alternative severing arrangement the cigarettes may be moistened on introduction to the disc through the feed shoot 3 or in the outlet aperture 5, and the cutter 6 is replaced by a squeezing roller.
