Cigarette-making machines. - For spreading cut tobacco in cigarette machines, a rotating drum 3, Fig. 1, transfers the tobacco from a feed belt 2 to a belt 5 conveying the tobacco to the forming chamber of the machine. The drum 3 is perforated and covered with wire cloth, and rotates on a cylinder 4 provided with a sector-shaped channel d of adjustable width, guide rollers c being provided and the channel d being connected to means for creating suction. The drum 4 thus retains the tobacco by suction between the rollers c. In a modification, Fig. 3, the tobacco is fed by a belt 7 and an inlet chute 8 to a perforated funnel 21 provided with fixed and rotating vanes 20, 19, for breaking up lumps of tobacco. The funnel 21 is connected by a hood 9 to a winnowing chamber provided with funnels 11 - - 13 fitted with suction drums 14 - - 16 rotating over plates 14<1> - - 16<1> and depositing the tobacco in layers on a feed belt 17, the heaviest tobacco being deposited by the drum 14 and the lightest by the drum 16. Dust is drawn off by a suction pipe 22 from a chamber 6 surrounding the funnel 21. The action of the drums 14 - - 16 may be facilitated by giving them an electrostatic charge. In a further modification, the tobacco is loosened by rotating vanes as it leaves a feed belt such as 7, Fig. 3, and falls on to a second feed belt. A current of air forces the tobacco from the second belt through a funnel into a winnowing chamber provided with three suction drums, and the tobacco not withdrawn by the suction drums is returned to the entrance funnel of the winnowing chamber.
