Abstract
681,146. Lathe details. WALDRICH, O. Nov. 24, 1948, No. 30523/48. Class 83 (iii). A lathe is provided with a bed having at least three shears which are not all of the same height and a tailstock with separately-supported front and rear limbs giving a bridge form, of which limbs one is supported on the rearmost shear while the lathe carriage does not engage this shear. In one form, Fig. 1, shears 15, 16, 18 are provided, the first two being of the same height while the third and rearmost extends approximately to the level of the lathe centre axis 20. The tailstock 21 bridges the middle shear and is supported by a guideway 22 on the front shear 15 and T-slots on the top 19 of the rear shear 18. The saddle 26 is carried on guideways 28 on the two shears 15, 16 of the same height and by making the tailstock 21 of staggered form, Fig. 2, the tool 32 may operate on work right up to the tailstock centre 33. The connecting webs for the bed may follow a cylindrical form into which a saddle of thickened centre-section may extend. The top of the rear shear 19 may be used for securing a steady. A steady 55, Figs. 11 and 12, for supporting the tailstock barrel 43 against deflection is bolted at 56 to the rearmost shear. Other methods of giving extra support to the tailstock barrel are described. The centre may be arranged within a pair of eccentric sleeves so that it may be set over for taper turning.
