Abstract

680,074. Hydraulic couplings. STURM, G. E. Oct. 16, 1950 [Oct. 14, 1949], No. 25208/50. Class 69 (ii). A variable ratio hydraulic coupling comprises a rotary vane pump 1 and a rotary vane motor 2, each mounted to rotate within an adjustable annular eccentric member 4, 5, respectively which guides the vanes, separated by a partition 10 having communicating slots 11, 12 and disposed in a common casing 9 to form an assembly which is adapted to be fixed in an outer housing 24. The eccentricity of the pump is adjustable during running whilst that of the rotor is fixed but may be adjusted during assembly. The housing 24 provides a reservoir which communicates with the low-pressure slot in the partition through ball valves. Pressure relief valves are provided between the high-pressure slot in the partition and the reservoir. In another embodiment the motor is of larger overall diameter and width than the pump and the eccentricity of both are adjustable during running.
