Abstract
679,670. Self-aligning journal bearings. PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. Dec. 28, 1950 [March 10, 1950], No. 6114/50. Class 12 (i). A self-aligning bearing of the kind wherein a shaft is carried in a bearing member or knuckle pad which is tiltably mounted in a knuckle seating has a cavity a formed either in the spherical surface of the knuckle pad b or the spherical surface c of the knuckle seating and connected to a duct d in the knuckle pad communicating solely with the shaft bearing at a point about 15 degrees to the vertical plane containing the shaft axis and displaced backwards in relation to the direction of rotation e of the shaft. The end of the duct d adjacent the shaft (not shown) enters a cavity f formed on the inner periphery of the bearing liner i whereby high pressure lubricant generated by the fluid film between the shaft and its bearing surface is fed into the cavity a so that the load, or a substantial part thereof, between the knuckle pad and the housing is carried by a layer of lubricant.
