Abstract

614,121. Bearings. SHAW, J. L. July 8, 1946, No. 20328. [Class 12 (i)] A composite bush which may be used as a floating bush for a connecting rod big-end bearing has one or more lubricant reservoirs formed inside the body of the bush and communicating with the inner and outer bearing surfaces. As shown, the bush is formed of an outer annular member 4 in which is pressed an inner member 1, the latter having a peripheral middle reservoir 7 communicating with side reservoirs 8 via channels 13. Lubricant is fed via a port 9 and a radial passage 10 in a shaft 3 to a passage 11 leading into the middle groove. Diametrically opposed radial passages 12 lead from the side grooves 8 to convey lubricant to the inner bearing surface of the bush. Similar diametrically opposed passages 14, but lying at 90 degrees and of smaller size, convey lubricant to the outer bearing surface of the bush. The inner bearing surface of the bush may be faced with antifriction metal. Both the annular members may be phosphor bronze, or one may be of white metal or synthetic plastic material. Alternatively, the outer member may be of hardened steel and the inner member may be of phosphor bronze with a facing of white metal. The bush may be formed of two complementary half annuli.
