Abstract

678,903. Cooling cylinders. NALLINGER, F. May 28, 1951 [Oct. 1, 1948; Oct 1, 1948], No. 12517/51. Class 7(ii) In an internal-combustion engine wherein each cylinder has overhead valves 8, Fig. 1, and a cooling jacket, the cylinder head casting 2 comprising in combination an inlet or an exhaust valve passage 6 and a valve guide 7 penetrating the head from the cylinder space to the side remote from the space, the valve passage opening beyond the cooling jacket 11, 12, to the connection for the inlet or exhaust ducts, and the casting 2 also comprising only integral wall parts of the head including those enclosing the valve passage 6 and valve guide 7, the external walls of the head are arranged so as also to enclose the cooling jacket spaces formed from sheet material 11, 12 applied to the casting and connected thereto. The cylinder block 1 and head 2 are cast in one piece, flanges 3 and 4 at the top and bottom of the casting being used to locate the metal sheets 11 and 12 around the casting and so provide the cooling jacket; the sheets 11 and 12 may be flat and have their edges bent to form flanges 13 and 14 whilst the end faces of the block 1 may either be part of the casting, separate metal sheets or extended parts of sheets 11 and 12. The inlet and exhaust passages 6 are curvilinear and the valves are arranged obliquely. In a modification, the cylinder and cylinder head are separate castings so that a further set of metal sheets are required for the head; a vertical flange formed on the two parts of the casting co-operate with flanges formed on the metal sheets around the head and cylinder. In a further modification, the inlet and exhaust passages are straight and obliquley disposed, and the metal sheets around the head are contoured to the configuration of the head side walls. In another modification, there is provided a .two-part cover 120, 121, Fig. 5, over the cylinder head that houses the valve operating gear and one part of which forms the curved portions of the otherwise straight and oblique inlet and exhaust passages 125, the cylinder and head having separate sheet metal jackets 126, 127 and 128, 129. whilst a sparking plug bore 130 penetrates the head jacket and casting. In a still further modification, the upper wall of thte cylinder head is formed by sheet metal and the inlet and exhaust passages and valves are in V-form instead of parallel with each other.. In another modification, the inlet and exhaust passages are arranged parallel to the cylinder axis and perpendicular to the cylinder head cover whilst the valves are inclined. In a further modification, the top of the cylinder and the cover plate 112, Fig. 12, are inclined and the valves 118 are parallel to the cylinder axis and the inlet and exhaust passages 114 inclined thereto. In some cases the valves may be perpendicular to the cover plate and the passages run either parallel with or at an angle to the cylinder axis. The passages and valves may be offset or in V-form in relation to each other; the cylinder head cover may be provided in all cases either wholly or partly in one piece therewith.
