678,549. Uniting by fusion. WALTHER & CIE, AKT.-GES. Jan. 19, 1951 [Jan. 20, 1950], No. 1534/51. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXVIII] A recess 3 around an aperture 2 in the wall 1 of a pressure vessel, e.g. a drum or header for a water-tube boiler or a still, provides an annular spigot 4 that engages in a recess 6 in the end of a tube 5 which is welded at 8 to the wall. The internal diameter c of the recess 6 may be less than the external diameter a of the spigot so that the tube has to be heated and shrunk on to the spigot, and the depth d of the recess 6 may be less than the height b of the spigot. Axial pressure may be applied to the tube during the welding operation so that the abutting surfaces of the spigot and recess 6 will be united by fusion.
