564,745. Sealing leaks in riveted &c. joints. THOMPSON WATER TUBE BOILERS, Ltd., J., and NAPIER, A. L. Feb. 12, 1943, No. 2323. [Class 123 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A method of sealing a leak in a joint of a boiler drum &c., comprises applying fluid, e.g. coloured water, under pressure to the leak from the outside of the drum so that it penetrates the leak in a direction inwardly to show up the source of leakage internally of the drum, and then sealing the leak at this latter point. The sealing may be effected by caulking and/or, if practicable, by using red lead paste &c. as the pressure fluid. As applied to a riveted joint, a rivet 2 is removed at the point of apparent leakage and a stopper plug inserted into the rivet hole. The plug is made in two parts 4, 5, the part 4 having a screwed shank 6 and the part 5 a coacting tapped hole 7, and, as shown, the shank 6 is of such a size as to provide an annular space between itself and the rivet hole to which pressure fluid is supplied from a cylinder 20, or gun, through a spring-pressed ball-controlled nipple 9 on the plug part 4 and through passages 11, 12 in the latter. Fluid-tightness between the plug 4, 5 and the rivet hole is secured by rubber washers 24 or by internally-located cup washers. The invention may also be applied to joints embodying bolts or screws, and to welded joints.
