An underfeed stoker of the kind whereof a series of bars are arranged side-by-side vertically around the top of the retort of an underfeed stoker is characterized in that each bar has the side thereof which is in contact with the fire provided with a raised projection or ridge formed thereon such that, with the series of firebars fixedly seated along the upper edge of the retort, they form an encircling frame for the latter in the nature of an upwardly-projecting wall, the inwardly-presented surface of which is of corrugated or serrated character in plan form. As shown in Fig. 2, the firebar is in the form of a plate-like element comprising a relatively thin central web 17a provided with a hole 45 and having its upper, inner and outer sides 25, 24 and 22 extended laterally so as to form Ranges 27, 26, 28, which abut those of the adjacent firebar. The sides 24, 25 are chamfered so as to provide ridges 33, 35, the lower end of the ridge 33 being cut in a vertical plane so as to produce a vertical surface 34 of inverted V-shape. Air from an air chamber 11, Fig. 1, is delivered to the fire through a recess in each firebar between the flanges 26 and 27.
