[Class 51 (i)] Grate bars for endless travelling grate stokers, of the type adapted to be arranged in transverse rows with air gaps between adjacent bars, and to be moved through the furnace by suitably supported and spaced chains 8 connected to the transverse rows by bulb bars 9 extending across the grate, and in which the air gap left between every two adjacent bars upon assembly is sinuous in plan throughout the greater part of its length, by forming a portion of each substantially vertical side face of the bars with alternate projections 20 22 and recesses 21, 23, the relative cross-sections of the projections being such that when two grate bars are juxtaposed in a transverse row the projections on one bar enter the recesses of the adjacent bar, have the alternate projections and recesses, which extend downwardly a desired distance from the top or fuel-supporting surface of the grate bar, curved, the curved form being generated about the axis of the bearing or jaw of the grate bar which engages the bulb bar. The portion 17 of the web of the bar near the bearing has a downwardly converging taper section and spacing projections 13, 14 cast thereon.
