Abstract
677,068. Hand-held abrasive tools. SEAL, N. W. March 29, 1948 [Feb. 26, 1949], No. 5300/49. Class 60. A hand-held tool comprises a body having a flat surface at its base to support a strip of flexible abrasive material, two cylinders S<SP>2</SP>, S<SP>3</SP>, Fig. 8, rotatably supported at opposite ends of the body and adapted to engage the ends of the strip, and separate means to lock each cylinder in frictional contact with the body. Each cylinder is secured at one end to a knurled winder H, Fig. 7, and may be withdrawn axially from the body to allow a used coil of abrasive material to be replaced. The other end of each cylinder has a tapered bore which bears on the tapered boss of a member A in screw threaded engagement with the body so that the cylinder may be locked by screwing the member into the body. The abrasive strip may take the form of a coil or belt of abrasive paper or cloth which is passed through diametrical slots in the cylinders or it may consist of a plate B, Fig. 22, of springy material which is provided with a coat of abrasive material and adapted to be clipped or screwed to the body. The base of the tool may be provided with a resilient layer of cork. When a coil or belt is used, it may be passed above or below rollers 9, 11, Fig. 8. One end of the tool is adapted to receive one of a number of interchangeable plates 6 which provide a profile complementary to that of the work. The body may be made from plastic, fibre, wood or metal, and the handle T which has a serrated surface may be detachable.
