HOLDER FOR ABRASIVE STRIPS I Filed May.l9, 1958 numw L, BY 3M2 27W??? ATTORNEY5 HOLDER FOR ABRASIVE STRIPS Earl W. Mangum, Durham, N.C., assignor to Clark Suds Return Systems, Inc., Durham, NC.
Application May 19, 1958, Serial No. 736,255
4 Claims. (Cl. 51-187) The invention relates to a holder for abrasive strips, adapting them for use as files and the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this type which is of simple and inexpensive construction, and is yet very effective in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide an arrangement which allows ready removal and replacement of the strips, either to allow a new strip to be attached when the one in use is worn out or to permit exchangeability of strips of different coarseness.
A further object of the invention is to provide an arrangement of this type by which, by interchanging strips of varying fineness, a single member can replace a large number of metal files.
Another object of the invention is to provide an arrangement in which the interchanging of the strips is quite simple.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an arrangement in which the strip holding member simultaneously acts as a knuckle guard to prevent the user from striking the work surface with his hand.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear more fully from the following description, especially when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings which form a part thereof.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 shows in plan view a strip holder embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The holder includes a blade 2. of rectangular crosssection which may be of any suitable metal, aluminum being preferred. This has in one end a notch 4 for receiving and holding one end of an abrasive strip. Such a notch may be for example in the form of that shown in the application of Earl Mangum, Ser. No. 706,974, filed January 3, 1958. Adjacent to but spaced from the other end of the blade is a notch 6. Secured to the blade between the notch 6 and the handle end of the blade is a strip 8 of spring metal which is held in position by screws 10. This strip has a part 12 extending toward the notch and, adjacent the notch, an outwardly bent part 14 and an inwardly bent part 16. The inner end 18 of part 16 is engageable in notch 6.
2,878,625 Patented Mar. 24, 1959 There is also provided a handle 20 which may be of metal, plastic, wood or other suitable material. This has a hollow 22 therein which is adapted to grip frictionally the handle end portion of the blade 2. The opening 22 is somewhat thicker than the blade 2, and its forward edge 24, when it is pressed fully onto the blade, engages the inner part of outwardly bent section 14 of the retaining member 8.
In use, the blade is removed from the handle and a strip 26 of flexible material having an abrasive surface is first secured at one end in the groove 4. It is then brought down the face of the blade until its other end is opposite notch 6. Retainer 8 is pulled outwardly and its free end 18 is allowed to move into the notch 6 and engage the end of the flexible member 26.
The handle is then replaced and the engagement of part 24 with member 14 ensures the holding of the blade tightly in the notch, so as to grip the cloth or other strip 26 and hold it in position.
Of course, the handle may be provided with suitable gripping surfaces as is indicated in the drawing.
The angle of the parts 14, 16 is preferably fairly close to with respect to the longitudinal center line of the blade.
The part 14 also acts as a knuckle guard, preventing the knuckles of the user from coming into contact with the surface which is being abraded with the device.
While I have described herein one embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not intend to limit myself thereby except within the scope of the claims hereto or hereinafter appended.
I claim:
1. A holder for strip abrasive material comprising an elongated blade having means at one end for releasably holding one end of a strip and having a notch in one face adjacent but spaced from the other end, a resilient strip secured to the blade between the notch and the other end having a part projecting toward the notch and having a portion adjacent the notch bent outwardly at an obtuse angle and then inwardly, the end of the inwardly bent portion engaging in said notch, and a handle having an opening therein frictionally engaging such other end of the blade, the opening being deeper than the thickness of the blade, one edge of the opening engaging the outwardly bent portion of the strip to clamp the inner end of the inwardly bent portion in the notch.
2. In a device as claimed in claim 1, said means for holding the strip end comprising a notch in the end of the blade sloping from its mouth toward the face of the strip in which the notch is located.
3. In a device as claimed in claim 2, the outwardly and inwardly bent portions forming angles of about 45 with the longitudinal axis of the strip.
4. In a device as claimed in claim 1, the outwardly and inwardly bent portions forming angles of about 45 with the longitudinal axis of the strip.
