2 Claims.
This invention relates to file holders, and more particularly, has reference to a file holder of the hand held type, adapted to releasably engage a conventionally formed file, to facilitate the reciprocation of the file over a piece of work.
One important object of the present invention is to provide a generally improved type of file holder, adapted to be formed at a low cost, while at the same time being adapted to be extended to accommodate files of different lengths.
Another important object is to provide'a file holder as described wherein a handle and a hand knob Will be spaced longitudinally thereof and will be adapted to receive the hands of. a user, with the hand knob being also adapted as a means for clamping a pair of telescopically related body portions against relative movement from selected positions of telescopic adjustment thereof.
Another object of importance is to provide a device of the type stated wherein an extensible body portion will be adapted for supporting a file of a selected length at any of a plurality of selected positions of angular adjustment relative to the longitudinal center line of the holder.
Still another object of importance is to provide a file holder as described which will be provided, at one end, with a simply formed means adapted to serve as a stop limiting movement of a supported file in one direction longitudinally of the device.
Other objects will appear from the following description, the claims appended thereto, and from the annexed drawing, in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a file holder formed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an end elevational view showing the device as it appears when viewed from the left of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a transversesectional View on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference numeral has been applied generally to the file supporting body of the device, said body being adapted to releasably engage and support a conventionally formed file designated generally at l2. At its inner end,the handle is cut away angularly to define a forwardly disposed, tapered handle extension [8, the angular recess at the inner end of the handle being designated by the reference numeral 20.
The body H) includes a main body portion '22 having its inner end solidly formed as shown in Figure 2, said inner end of the main body portion being received in the angular recess 20 of the handle and being Welded or otherwise fixedly connected to a guard 24. The guard 24 is formed from apiece of fiat metal material, and is disposed perpendicularly to the main body portion 22, within the angular recess 20 of the handle 14.
The guard 24 is welded as at 26 to the handle 14, or may be otherwise fixedly attached to the handle.
Formed in the guard 24 are openings '28, 30 respectively, said'openings being spaced different distances from the mainbody portion 22. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the opening '28 is of circular formation, the opening 30 bein of rectangular or square configuration. Either of the openings 28 or 30 is adapted'to receive the tang of a conventional file l2, and it will be noted that the tang can, by reason of the construction illustrated and described, be disposed difierent distances from the main body portion 22. Further, the opening 30 is so formed as to receive tangs of rectangular cross section.
The extension body portion and the main body portion, thus, can be adjusted relative to one another to extend the overall length of the file supporting body l0.
At its outer end, the extension body portion 42 is integrally formed with a depending tongue 44 normal to that part of the extension body portion that is slidably engaged in the dovetail groove,
said tongue 44 having, at its free end, a hook-like extension 46 spaced longitudinally of the tele- Formed in the main body portion, intermediate the opposite ends thereof, is an upstanding boss 34, said boss having a threaded recess 35 adapted to receive the complementarily threaded shank of a hand knob 36. The hand knob 35 is adapted to be grasped by the other hand of a user, thus to facilitate reciprocation of the device over a piece of work. At the same time, the hand knob can be rotated for adjusting the threaded shank toward the extension body portion 42, thus to clamp the respective body portions against move ment from selected positions of telescopic adjustment thereof.
Formed upon the main body portion 22 is a longitudinal rib 38, said rib being adapted to reinforce the main body portion for the purpose of rigidifying the same during use of the device.
As will be noted, the opening 48 is adapted to cooperate with the respective openings 28, 30, for the purpose of supporting the file in selected positions of angular adjustment relative to the elongated body l0.
By reason of this arrangement, the file I2 will be angularly disposed, relative to the longitudinal center line of the device, and when the device is reciprocated along a path aligned with said longitudinal center line, the file 12 will be brought into effective engagement with a piece of work, for the purpose of filing down the surface of th work in a desired manner. Thus, for example, if the surface of the work is not aligned with the plane of the body In, as for example where the work has a rounded surface, it is not necessary to tilt the handle and the telescopically engaged body portions, and said handle and body portions can be grasped in a natural manner that is effective to facilitate application of the file to the work.
It is also believed to be an important characteristic of the invention that the device, while still being adapted to perform efliciently the functions stated above, can nevertheless be constructed at a relatively low cost, since the device comprises a minimum of parts simply arranged.
It is believed clear that the invention is not necessarily confined to the specific use or uses thereof described above, since it may be utilized for any purpose to which it may be suited. Nor is the invention to be necessarily limited to the specific construction illustrated and described, since such construction is only intended to be illustrative of the principles of operation and the means presently devised to carry out said principles, it being considered that the invention comprehends any minor change in construction that many be permitted within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a file holder of the hand held type, a handle proportioned to be grasped by one hand of a user; and a body of telescopic formation secured thereto and including a main body portion rigid at one end with the handle, a guard rigid with and depending from said one end of the main portion and having a plurality of openings spaced different distances from the main portion for insertion of the tang provided at one end of a file in a selected one of the openings, an extension body portion telescopically engaged in the other end of the main portion, said main portion having intermediate its ends a threaded aperture opening upon the surface of the extension portion, a hand knob adapted for receiving the other hand of a user and having a threaded shank engaged in said aperture for clamping the respective body portions against movement from selected positions of relative telescopic adjustment thereof, and a tongue depending from the other end of the extension portion and having an opening adapted for engaging the other end of said file, said openings of the guard cooperating with the opening of the tongue for supporting the file at selected angles relative to said body portions.

In a file holder of the hand held type, a relatively elongated, straight handle proportioned to be grasped by one hand of a user; and an elongated body of telescopic formation projecting from the handle in longitudinal alignment therewith, and including a straight, main body portion rigid at one end with the handle, a guard rigid with and depending from said one end of the main portion in perpendicular relation thereto and having a plurality of openings spaced different distances from the main portion for insertion of the tang provided at one end of a file in a selected one of the openings, a straight, extension body portion telescopically engaged at one end in the other end of the main portion, said main portion having intermediate its ends a threaded aperture opening upon the surface of the extension portion, a hand knob adapted for receiving the other hand of a user and having a threaded shank engaged in said aperture for clamping the respective body portions against movement from selected positions of relative telescopic adjustment thereof, and a tongue integral with and depending from the other end of the extension portion in perpendicular relation thereto and having an opening adapted for engaging the other end of said file, said tongue including a hook-like extension spaced longitudinally of the extension body portion from the opening of the tongue, to form a stop adjacent said opening of the tongue, said openings of the guard cooperating with the opening of the tongue for supporting the file at selected angles relative to said body portions, and said hook-like extension of the tongue engaging said other end of the file in each position to which the file is angularly adjusted relative to the body portions, to hold the file against movement in one direction longitudinally of said body portions.
