Application March 17, 1948, Serial No. 24,015
2 Claims. l
This invention relates to a finger safety protector which can be used as convenient attachment for files and the like. The new device is simple, extremely easy to apply and adds a high safety factor to many machine shop op- 'erations.
Briefly, in accordance with the instant invention a narrow spoon shaped head is mounted on a tapering handle for easy attachment in parallel with the blade of a hand instrument such as a le to the latters handle. Various other modifications of this idea will be discussed farther on in this description.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of objects and advantages thereof, reference Will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the attached drawings forming an important part of the instant specications where like numerals denote like parts in the several views:
Fig. 1 is a top view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a Icross section along line 2-2 of Fig. 1..
Fig. 3 is a central cross section showing the device of the two preceding figures attached to a hand le.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the device of the preceding figures in operation.
Fig. 5 is a top view showing a modication of the device of the invention.
Fig. 6 is a bottom view showing the device of the preceding iigure attached to a hand file.
Fig. 7 is `.a central section through line 'l-'I of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a top view of the device of the preceding figures.
In accordance with the invention, a conveniently rounded head I!) has a central round depression II and a rim IZ along the circumference of said rounded depression II. One side of the rim I2 is roundedly bent to taper into an elongated handle I3 for attachment which may end up in a plurality of teeth I 4 cut off Where they are nearer the head portion It and tapering in the direction of the end I5 of handle I3.
In accordance with this embodiment of the invention the device is attached into the handle I'B of a hand tool such as a le I1 -by hammering the point I5 and the teeth I4 ofthe attachment into the le handle I6 so as to put the 2 attachment in parallel with the blade of file I'I. The attachment is resilient and can be depressed by the thumb so as to touch file I'I providing a safe gripping means for the iile during its usual mode of operation such as when cutting a, notch I9 into an object 2U.
In accordance with another embodiment of the instant invention best illustrated in Figs. 5-8 the attachment handle I3 is spirally bent so as to fit around an edge portion of iile II. In operating this modication substantial additional gripping space is obtained when the spiral 2I of attachment handle I3 contacts the edge of file I1 while the head of the attachment is being depressed by a thumb and While the instrument is in its backward motion.
Either modification of the instant invention can be easily attached to almost any existing lhand tool giving extremely good guidance with added safety and considerable savings in energy by the workman. It will be readily seen that the device is extremely simple, easy to make and 'easy to attach and highly economical in cost and operation.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modiiications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A thumb protector attachment for use on a hand tool having a blade with an end portion inserted into a handle, comprising a head portion to be positioned against the blade on one side thereof, and a handle portion continuing from said head portion, said handle portion being formed intermediate of its ends with a spiral bend to be extended about an edge portion of the blade to position the free end of said handle portion against the other side of the handle, said free end of said handle portion being insertable into the handle alongside of the end portion of the blade.
2. A thumb protector attachment for use on a hand tool having a blade with an end portion inserted into a handle, comprising a head portion to be positioned against the blade on one side thereof, and a handle portion continuing from said head portion, said handle portion 'being formed intermediate of its ends with a spiral bend to be extended about an edge por- 3 tion of the blade to position the free end of said handle portion against the other side of the handle, said free end of said handle portion being insertable into the handle alongside of the end portion of the blade, the free end of said handle portion being formed along its sides with teeth for gripping the material of the handle.
