This invention relates to a holder for steel wool or the like, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind embodying means whereby it may be quickly and effectively engaged with a pad of steel wool or kindred material in a manner to permit the desired eifective use of the steel Wool without liability of injury to the hand of the user.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement ofthe several parts of my improved holder for steel wool or the like whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in bottom plan of a holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention Figure 2 is a view in end elevation of the device as illustrated in Figure 1 with the body in its normal or flattened form;

Figure 3 is an end elevational view showing the side marginal portions of the body upwardly bent or flexed with the holder in position to be initially engaged with a pad of steel wool or the like.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, my improved holder comprises a body B formed of rubber, rubber compound or other suitable flexible and yielding material which will not be materially affected by contact with moisture.

As herein disclosed the body B is substantially rectangular in plan and at substantially its transverse center is provided entirely therealong with a relatively broad groove or channel 1 of dovetail form in cross section. This groove or channel 1 results in the central portion 2 of the body B being materially reduced in thickness, this facilitating bending or flexing of the body B in 1931.. Serial No. 530,950.

The side walls of the groove or channel 1 adjacent to each end thereof are provided with a pair of'relatively close fingers 3 disposed inwardly and transversely of the groove or channel 1 and spaced apart in a direction lengthwise thereof. One of these fingers'of the pair extends from one of the side walls finger is carried-by the second or opposed wall of the groove or channel. v

The fingers 3 are preferably metallic and areof a length tohave their outer ends ter minate substantially at the transversecentcr of the groove or channel 1 with the outer ends of saidflngers slightly enlarged, as at 4:,to facilitate the desired gripping action'upon the pad of steel wool or the like with which the holder may be employed. a

The back or top face of the body B at substantially its transverse center and above the groove or channel 1 has formed therewith a handle member 5 adapted to be grasped betweenthe digits of a hand. The bodyB and the handle member 5 are preferably integral to facilitate production.

In practice, the body B has its side portions flexed inwardly toward the handle member 5, and along the groove or chamiel 1 resulting in a material separation of the side walls of the groove or channel, and also bringing the fingers 3 in a depending angular relation with respect to the top wall of the groove or channel 1 so that when the holder is pressed down upon a pad'of steel wool or kindred material the fingers 3 will penetrate such pad, thus assuring upon release of the body B effective anchorage or connection of the pad to the holder. With the holder engaged with the pad the desired separation may be easily accomplished by bending or flexing the side portions of the body B in substantially the same manner as hereinbefore referred to withrespect to the application of the holder to a pad and also as illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawing.

In order to facilitate the desired flexing of the side portions of the body B the back '00 of the groove or channel 1 while the second 7 margins of the body B are provided a substantial distance therealong with the outstanding integral lips 01' flanges 6.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a holder for steel wool or the like constructed in accordance With my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility With which it may be assembled and operated, and it Will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts. herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed. a I T I claim 1. A holder of the class described comprising a flexible body member having a groove 7 on'one face material engaging fingers projecting from the side Walls of said groove, the fingers on the two walls being offset from each other and the combined lengths of a finger on one Wallof the groove and a finger on the other 'Wall being greater than the Width of the groove.
