Description

July 2s, 1942. E J CARTER 2,291,184
BOXING GLOVE F'led May 24, 1939 Patented July 28, 1942 BOXING GLOVE Edward Joseph Cartier, Toronto, Ontario, Canada,
assignor of one-half to William Conley, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Application May 24, 1939, Serial No. 275,527 In Canada June 6, 1938 6 Claims.
This invention relates to boxing gloves and it consists in the constructions, arrangements and combinations herein described and claimed.
It is the cardinal object of the invention to provide a construction of glove body which may be moulded from rubber or compositions having similar characteristics, permitting fabrication of a glove which is devoid of facing or covering material, thereby eliminating stitches, seams and like raised parts.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a new and novel construction in the main body of the glove, reducing weight and increasing the resilience of the body.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel construction of hand envelope complemental to the main body of the glove for permanent securement thereto.
Additional objects, advantages and features of invention will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure l is a plan View of the main body portion of a glove constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through a glove constructed in accordance with the invention,
Figure 3 is a plan view of the envelope member.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view on the `line 4 4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is an end elevation of the main body shown in Figure 1 viewed in the direction of the wrist portion,
Figure 6 is a cross section on the line 6--6 of Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a side elevation of the interior hand grip employed in the hand envelope.
Figure 8 is a similar view of the exterior hand grip.
Figure 9 is a fragmentary cross section through the hand envelope at the lacing portion thereof.
Figure 10 is a partial end elevation of the hand envelope illustrating the wrist portions.
Attention is first invited to Figure 2 of the drawing wherein there is shown a boxing glove I0 consisting of a main body I I and a hand envelope I2,
The main body I I is formed from rubber, preferably sponge rubber, and includes an integral one-half wrist portion I3 and a thumb stall I4 which is open upon one side. The body II may have an exterior'ccntour quite similar to that of the ordinary boxing glove, but the interior of the spaced longitudinally of the body, each opening being elongated in the direction of the exterior contour of the glove and of a width stopping short of the longitudinal edges of the body II. It should be noted that by elongating the openings I5 in the direction of the exterior contour of the body II, the openings adjacent the tip of the glove and adjacent the wrist portion are of lesser length than the openings in the medial and adjacent portions of the glove body. Such construction permits ready clenching of the glove, since the wall portion I S between the openings may be readily flexed and maintaining the outer surface of the glove smooth.
The body II may be formed in a mold construced to shape the main body I I, the openings I5, walls I6, the half wrist section I3 and thumb stall portion I4, and in addition the interior longitudinal medial portion IIa of the body should be slightly recessed as indicated at I'I and more deeply recessed as indicated at I'I for reception of a hand envelope I8 now to be described.
The hand envelope I 8 may be formed from any 25 v approved material so long as it can be adhesively or similarly secured to the body II. The envelope I8 is formed as a contiguous body including a thumb stall I4', the envelope being open at one end as at I9 and slotted as at 20 at said end. The envelope is of a length and width and so shaped as to t within the recesses II-Il with the thumb stall I4 engaged within the thumb stall I 4, The envelope is firmly secured therewithin by an adhesive or cement applied between the wall 2I of the envelope and surfaces within thumb stall Ill and the recesses I7--I'I.
The envelope I8 is provided with reinforcements 22 adjacent its open end corresponding to reinforcements 23 formed on the wrist portion I3 of the main body II, these reinforcements being in registry and suitably secured in such relation by any suitable cement or adhesive, as clearly shown in Figure 2. It should be noted however that the reinforcements 22 are interrupted at the slot 28 of the envelope, for a purpose as will presently appear.
The slot 2 is provided at its longitudinal sides with a lacing strip 24 adhesively or otherwise secured to the wall 25 of the envelope and at the lower portion of the slot 20 and a reinforcing and lace protecting strip 24 is similarly secured to the wall 25, the strip extending upwardly into contacting engagement with respective portions of the reinforcing members 22.
Centrally of the wall 25 of the envelope, upon body is provided with a plurality of openings I5 55 both sides thereof, hand grip members 26 are secured materially assisting in clenching of the glove for use as well as affording support to the hand of the user.
By interrupting the reinforcements 22 of the hand envelope I8 it is possible to readily separate the members 22 laterally for insertion of a hand within the envelope, and since the reinforcements are of rubber the inherent resilience thereof will return these members to normal position above the lacing strips 24.
While I have specifically described and shown my construction of glove this is by way of illustration only and I consider as my own all such modications in structure as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A boxing glove comprising a main body member of rubber of substantial transverse thickness, a wrist portion integrally formed with the body member, said body member having a recess upon one side and extended through the wrist portion, a thumb portion, integrally formed with the body member, and a hand envelope ccmplemental to the recess and xed therein.
2. A boxing glove comprising a main body member of rubber of substantial transverse thickness, a wrist portion integrally formed with the body member, said body member having a recess upon one side and extended through the Wrist portion, a thumb portion integrally formed with the main body and having an open side, said main body member having a plurality of openings spaced longitudinally intermediate the length thereof; a hand envelope including a thumb portion and a wrist portion, the envelope being positioned within the recess with the thumb portion engaged within the thumb portion of the main body, the wrist portion of the hand envelope being complemental to the Wrist portion of the main body, and adhesive means between contacting portions of the envelope and the main body member.
3. The structure of claim 2 in which the hand envelope includes a slot extended from the open end inwardly a distance, lacing strips iixed to the sides of the slot, and reinforcing strips fixed to the hand envelope partly overlying the lacing strips.
4. A boxing glove comprising a main body member of rubber of substantial transverse thickness, a wrist portion integrally lformed with the body member, said body member having a recess upon one side and extended through the wrist portion, a thumb portion integrally formed with the main body and having an open side, said main body having a plurality of transverse openings spaced longitudinally intermediate the length thereof; a. hand envelope including a thumb portion and a wrist portion, the envelope being positioned within the recess with the thumb portion engaged within the thumb portion of the main body, the wrist portion of the hand envelope being complemental to the wrist portion of the main body and adhesive means between contacting portions of the envelope and the main body member.
5. A boxing glove Comprising a main body member of rubber of substantial transverse thickness, a wrist portion integrally formed with the body member, said body member having a recess upon one side and extended through the wrist portion, a thumb portion integrally formed with the main body and having an open side, said main body having a plurality of transverse openings spaced longitudinally intermediate the length thereof; the openings being elongated in the direction of the exterior contour of the main body, the transverse length of the openings being such as to stop inwardly of the longitudinal edges of the main body member, a hand envelope including a thumb portion and a wrist portion, the envelope being positioned within the recess with the thumb portion engaged Within the thumb portion of the main body, the wrist portion of the hand envelope being complemental to the wrist portion of the main body and adhesive means between contacting portions of the envelope and the main body member.
6. The structure of claim 5 in which the hand envelope comprises a slot extended from the open end inwardly a distance, lacing strips xed to the sides of the slot, reinforcing strips xed to the palm portion of the envelope and partly overlying the lacing strips, and opposed hand grip members fixed to the palm portion of the hand envelope inwardly of the closed end thereof.
