SAFETY RAZOR Filed Oct. 20, 1941 Patented Sept. 22, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAFETY RAZOR Henry W. Berg, Cleveland, Tenn.
Application October 20, 1941, Serial No. 415,821
Claims.
This invention relates to a safety razor and aims to provide in that type of razor wherein the blade is removably clamped or held by spaced lugs at the cutting edge in combination with a spring-urged clamp at the edge parallel thereto, a novel means which functions to impart to the cutting edge portion of the blade, a slight convexity or curvature relatively to the guard, which I have found markedly increases the shaving eff1- ciency of the blade and which means is additionally advantageous in urging the cutting edge portion against the lugs and the blade in place with greater firmness.
I further aim to attain the aforesaid results through the use of a manually operable, centrally and diagonally disposed element which contacts the rear surface of the blade relatively close to the cutting edge and has means to so restrict its movement that the blade cannot be unduly tensioned or curved.
Various additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of th description following taken in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a sid elevation of a safety razor in which my invention is embodied;
Figure 2 is a front end elevation of such safety razor, with the blade omitted to disclose details;
Figure 3 is an enlarged view, primarily in central, vertical, longitudinal section, through the safety razor and my improvements;
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the plane of line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a detail perspective View of the blade-flexing rod, and
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of blade-flexing rod.
Referring specifically to the drawing, my improvements are shown and described as applied to one construction of safety razor by Way of example. In such construction, I!) designates an angularly disposed metallic mounting plate whose lower portion is formed as a guard at H for a blade [2 removably disposed against the forward surface of such mounting plate. Said blade I 2 at spaced locations along its cutting edge I3, is overlapped by lugs or hooks I4 and at the edge parallel to said cutting edge, which is reinforced by a backing I5, the same is engaged by a clamp IS.
The specific clamp I6 is in the form of an L-shaped lever having a main arm 16 extending through an opening I! in plate l0 and pivoted in place at l 8 to the under surface of a flange l9 extending angularly from the upper edge of plate It]. A leaf spring 20 is fastened at 2| to the under surface of flang IS in overlapping relation to an arm 22 of clamp l6, normally urging the clamp into the blade-clamping position shown, and permitting the main arm N5 of said clamp to be gripped and swung away from the blade to enable removal and insertion of blades.
A removable handle 23 extends rearwardly from the flange l9.
In carrying out my invention in connection with the aforesaid type of safety razor, holes or openings 24 and 25, respectively, are drilled or otherwise provided through the plate [0 and flange I9. Screw threads are provided in the wall of opening 25.
A rod 26, disposed at the angl shown, has screw threads 2'! threaded to those in opening 25. Said rod passes loosely through and is guided by opening 24, the latter preferably being enlarged with respect to the rod. At its forward end 28, said rod abuts the rear or back surface of blade I2 so that through screw adjustment of the rod, the blade l2 at a location relatively close to the cutting edge portion, will be flexed or curved. Said end 28 is preferably chamfered or rounded as shown.
Said rod is operated through the turning of a crank knob 29 or the equivalent and the rod may be secured at any desired adjustment through the bearing of a nut 30 against the flange I9. Nut 30 is threaded on threads 21 as is also a nut 3| which serves as a lock for the nut 30.
Through the adjustment of rod 26, blade [2, since it is overlapped by the spaced lugs I4 and yieldably held by clamp I6, may be flexed or bowed within certain limits, centrally and adjustably, at the cutting edge portion away from the plate I0. I have found that the blade thus curved, increases its shaving efficiency. For better emphasis, the curvature of the blade in Fig. 4, is exaggerated. Although the rod 26 may be loosened, it can be rapidly returned to the exact position of adjustment with respect to a blade l2 due to the engagement of nut 30 with flange l9 and locking of said nut by nut 3i.
The divergence of rod 26 with respect to the blade l2, when the blade is tensioned and flexed by the rod, urges the cutting edge into contact with the lugs l4 and urges the back against cilitate manipulation of the rod 26 by a finger of the same hand which grasps the handle or holds the razor.
The upper end of rod 26 may have any suitable manipulating part, the crank knob 29 having been shown by way of example only. For instance, a round knob 32 may be used instead, as suggested in Figure 6.
Various changes may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A safety razor having a mounting plate, a blade, means clamping said blade against one face of the plate including spaced elements engaging the cutting edge portion of the blade, and means operatively mounted on the mounting plate movable independently of the plate against the blade adjacent its cutting edge and between said elements of a length to flex said cutting edge portion to bow the latter relatively to and out of parallelism to the plate and said elements.
2. A safety razor having a mounting plate, a blade, means clamping said blade against one face of the plate including spaced elements engaging the cutting edge portion of the blade, and means operatively screw threaded on the mounting plate in diverging relation to the cutting edge portion of the blade and movable independently of the plate against the latter between said elements of a length to flex said cutting edge portion to bow the latter relatively to and out of parallelism to the plate and said elements.
3. A safety razor having a mounting plate, a blade removably disposed against one face thereof having a cutting edge portion and a back edge portion, longitudinally spaced lugs on said plate overlapping the blade at the cutting edge portion, a clamp on the plate overlapping the back edge portion of said blade, a flange extending from said plate on the side opposite to said lugs, and a centrally disposed element on the razor passing diagonally through the plate and said flange and screw threaded to and movable independently of one of them, said element contacting the blade between the lugs and relatively close to said cutting edge and being of a length to convex the blade out of parallelism with and rela- HENRY W.
