LETTER-COPYING MOISTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,400, dated April 28, 1891.
Application filed May 19 1890.

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. DODD, of \Villiamsporuin the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter-Copying Moisteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in letter-copyingmoisteners or damping device, the object being to provide a convenient and efficacious instrument for retaining a supply of water and gradually emitting it as pressure is applied for the purpose of moistening the paper used in copying or transcribing written or printed matter; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved moistener. Fig. 2 is a transverse section, and Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal section.
A represents ahollow tube or cylinder composed of any hard substance, such as steel, copper, brass, or other metal or vulcanized rubber or its equivalent. This tube or cylinder constitutes a roller adapted to be rolled over the surface to be moistened instead of the moistening-brush in common use. This tube or cylinder is closed at its ends by the integral and removable heads 1 and 2, respeotively. These heads are substantially alike, except that the removable head 2 is preferably furnished with a screw-threaded top 3, designed to screw into corresponding threads 4:, formed in the open end of the tube or cylinder. The object of making the head 2 removable is to provide for supplying the cylinder with water, which is poured in at this end, after which the head 2 is screwed on again. The surface of the cylinder is provided with numerous perforations, through which the water contained in it is discharged as fast as it is required in moistening the paper or blotters, as the case may be. felt, or other material, preferably of cylindrical form, capable of receiving, retaining, and, when pressure is applied, emitting moisture. The edges of the heads 1 and 2 project a distance beyond the surface of the cylinder about equal to the thickness of the absorbent material on the cylinder for several reasons, prominent among which are to prevent the water from squeezing or oozing out at the ends, where it will be liable to get on the operator or on something else where it was not wanted, to retain the absorbent material on the surface of the roller, and otherwise give a neat finish to the article.
The removable head may be milled or otherwise constructed to facilitate its removal or application to the end of the cylinder, and both the heads may be furnished with handles extending out in line with the axis of the cylinder or at right angles to the axis, and one handle may be constructed to receive water through it, or, still better, the handle shown in Figs. 1 and 3 may be employed. A device of this character is in constant domand, and it will supply a constant deficiency hitherto felt and which the ordinary brush usually relied upon in default of something better is not qualified to supply.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
