ERASING DEVICE Filed Feb. 25, 1937 122029122 57: mzzaz'd fie 7'12 c'er an u l Patented June 20, 1939 UNITED STATES ERASING DEVICE Application February 25, 1937, Serial No. 127,735
4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in erasing device, particularly adapted for erasing written matter such as typewriting, and for use by draftsmen for making erasures in drawings, and for other purposes, and one of. the objects of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character which will be. power driven, and which at the same time will be of a simple, durable and light construction, effective and efficient in operation, and easy to handle.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty, in substantially the construction, com bination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, and in which Figure 1 is a view taken on line i-I Figure 2 of a modified form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the eccentric element.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the device consists essentially of a flexible shaft arranged within a casing l0 and which shaft is connected to any suitable source of power.
At one end of the casing l 0 is arranged a frame H having an open portion l2 and forming bearings i3 and I4. Into the bearing l3 one end of the casing i9 projects and the end of the shaft i 5 which projects beyond the casing I0 is rotatively supported in bearing Id. The end of the shaft projects through and beyond the bearing l4, and may be provided with threads It.
With this device it will be manifest that the frame I i will constitute a handle or hand hold by means of which the tool may be manipulated.
In use the shaft is rotated from a suitable source of power which will rotate the eraser l1. By grasping the casing or frame H, and while the eraser is rotated it will be manifest that the latter may be manipulated and placed into contact with the surface to be cleaned or from which the erasure is to be made.
The open space [2 in the frame ll permits access to the portion l5 of the shaft so that this portion may be gripped with a tool or in any manner to hold the shaft against rotation while the member 28 is being screwed onto or off of the threaded end it.
In the present exemplification of the invention there is provided a casing comprising two secti-ons it which may be fitted together by tongue having a pin 2f extending beyond one end there- 10 of which is arranged eccentrieally with respect to the axis of the member 20.
The numeral 22 designates a lever which is arranged in the portion of'the casing l8 that is disposed. at an angle to the portion in which the 16 member 20 is arranged. This lever 22 is pivotally mounted intermediate its ends as at 23 and the upper extremity of the lever is bifurcated as at 24 and is so positioned that the eccentric pin 2| will project into the bifurcation.
The free extremity of the lever 22 terminates 20 at substantially the lower end of the casing l8 and the walls of this portion of the casing are provided with slots 25 so as not to interfere with the movement of the lever 22 about the pivot 23. The lower end of the lever is preferably tubular as at 20 and into this tubular portion one extremity of the erasing element 21 projects,
In operation the casing is is grasped in the hand so as to position the element 2! with respect to the work.
When the shaft is rotated the element 20 will be rotated and this in turn will rotate the eccentrically mounted pin 2| to rock the lever 22 back and forth about the pivot 23.
By grasping the casing l8 it will be prevented from rotating with the shaft.
While the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What is claimed as new is:
4 1. A device of the character described embodying a flexible shaft, bearings spaced a substantial distance from each other, a member connecting said bearings and forming therewith a side opening frame, the end of said shaft being journaled in said bearings and extending across the frame, a support, a lever pivoted to the support, a tool holder at one end of the lever, and means detachably and operatively connecting the other end of the lever with said shaft, the said member between the bearings serving as a hand hold whereby to manipulate the said tool, the open side of the frame affording access to the shaft between the bearings, whereby the shaft may be gripped and held against rotation while the tool is being attached or detached from the shaft.
2. A device of the character described embodying a flexible shaft, bearings spaced a substantial distance from each other, a member connecting said bearings and forming therewith a side opening frame, the end of the shaft being journaled in said bearings and extending across the frame, an open ended housing, one end of the housing abutting and disposed in alinement with one of said bearings, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends and disposed in said housing, a connection between one end of the lever and said shaft, said connection being disposed in the housing, and a tool holder .at the other end of the lever, said member between the bearings serving as a hand hold whereby to manipulate the tool which is connected to the lever, said open side of the frame affording access to the shaft between the bearings whereby the shaft may be gripped and held against rotation.
3.'A device of the character described embodying a flexible shaft, bearings spaced a substantial distance from each other, a member connecting said bearings and forming therewith a 'f side opening frame, the end of the shaft being journaledin said bearings and extending across the frame, an open ended housing, one end of the housing abutting and disposed in alinement with one of said bearings, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends and disposed in said housing, a
connection between one end of the lever and said shaft, said connection embodying a member disposed in the housing and threaded upon the end of the shaft, a connection between the last said member and the lever to rock the lever, and a tool holder at the other end of the lever, the first said member between the bearings serving as a hand hold whereby to manipulate the tool which is connected to the lever, said open side of the frame affording access to the shaft between the bearings whereby the shaft may be gripped and held against rotation.
4. A device of the character described embodying a flexible shaft, bearings spaced a substantial distance from each other, a member connecting said bearings and forming therewith a side opening frame, the end of the shaft being journaled in said bearings and extending across the frame, an open ended housing, said housing being divided longitudinally, means separably securing the parts of the housing together, one end of the housing abutting and disposed in alinement with one of said bearings, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends and disposed in said housing, a connection between one end of the lever and said shaft, said connection being disposed in the housing, and a tool holder at the other end of the lever, member between the bearings serving as a band hold whereby to manipulate the tool which is connected to the lever, said open side of the frame aifording access to the shaft between the bearings whereby the shaft may be gripped and held against rotation.
