FUR MARKER.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it knownthat I, Louis RosNER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Fur Marker, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an implement designed primarily for temporarily marking fur to provide a guide for the cutting thereof along zigzag or sinuous lines so that the hair of juxtaposed skins sewed together along such lines will not show the sharp demarcation resulting from the sewing of such skins along straight seams.

In its preferred form, my invention comprises a marking roller having an embossed periphery forming a zigzag ridge to which pulverulent marking material, as chalk, is applied, preferably by means of a distributing roller contacting therewith, the distributing roller rbeing supplied with ma terial from a store thereof held in a chamber of the handle on which the marking roller is journalled.

The characteristic features of my invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings in illustra-tion of a preferred embodiment of my invention.

In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the forward portion thereof; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view transverse to the view shown in Fig. 2, and Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate rollers with modified embossments thereon and suitable for substitution for the roller shown in Fig. 1. f

As illustrated in the drawings, a handle 1 has integrally formed therewith a housing 2 terminating in bifurcations 3 and containing a chamber or recess 4 with an open end between the bifurcations and communicates at the other end with a bore or cavity 5 in the handle. A wall of the housing trans verse to the open end is cut away to provide access to the chamber, and the port thus formed is controlled by a closure 6 pivotally connected with the side walls of the chamber by the pintle 7 and having lateral ears 8 engaged in recesses 9.

A wheel or roller 10 is journalled between the bifurcations 3 on the pintle 11, which passes through the bifurcations and is held in place by the head 12 and nut 12. A tire 13, suitably of rubber, is lixedon the wheel 10 andprovided with an embossed periph'- ery forming a datum ridge 14 parallel to the axis of the roller, and a zigzag ridge which may be in the form of straight lines 15 disposed at suitable angles as in Figs. 1 and 4 or in the form of a sinuous curve 16 as in Fig. 5.

A rubber tired roller 17 is fixed on a pintle 18 forming trunnions engaged in longitudinal slots 19 in the Walls of the housing, so as to permit radial play of this roller in the chamber 4.

A coiled spring 20, seated in the bore 5, projects into the chamber 4 and presses a block 21 of suitable marking material, as chalk, against the periphery of the roller 17, which is in turn pressed by the action of the spring against the peripheral einbossment of the roller 10 and distributes the chalk thereon when the rollers are rotated.

It will be understood that, in operation, an operative rolls the roller 10 over the hide to be marked. The rotation of the roller 10 rotates the roller 17 so that its periphery is chalked by Contact with the block 21, and the pulverule'nt chalk is thereby distributed over the zigzag ridge on the roller 10, from which lit is transferred to the hide. This arrangement avoids the rapid destruction of the chalk block which would result from contact of the embossed ridges directly therewith and gives a uniform marking of desired contour on the fur.

4. An instrument of the character described comprising a housing having a bifureated end and Containing a chalk holding chamber having an.y open end between said bifurcations and an opening in a Wal'I transverse to said end, a roller j ournalled in said bifurcations, a hinged closure for said opening last named, and means for eedingl chalk in said chamber to said roller.

5. An instrument of the charaeter described comprising a housing containing a recess for holding chalk, said housing having slotted Walls, a rol-1er having trunnions in said slots, a roller journalled on said housing and having a periphery forming a zigzag ridge ContactingA with the periphery of said roller first named, and means comprising a spring for feeding chalk against the periphery of Said roller first named.
